On 17 May 2021, Cyclone Tauktae wreaked havoc on Mumbai, triggering floods and traffic jams. In Colaba, it left behind a string of fallen trees in its wake. The pristine heritage zone houses tall, magnificent trees that interline legendary boulevards across the zone. Gateway of India, the next day, stood amidst sights of the mayhem, stones lying strewn after the landfall, walls battered beyond recognition, the barricades flung about. Why, even the booth at the jetty had been yanked out of place and lay in the middle of the road.

Here goes a PhotoEssay by The Draft on Colaba's stone-peppered zones, its colossal historic trees, the day after, broken and battered, as they lie fallen on parked private cars and roads and the work initiated by civic workers and volunteers who arrived promptly to restore Gateway of India to its original glory. Watch these, for now. The day after the Day After will be a different story altogether!
